Highland Games and being Scottish

Why does the Scottish blood sing loudly in the veins even in those who have never set foot on Scottish soil? My ancestry isn’t exclusively Scottish, there’s a little Irish, a little English and way back some Norwegian. What is it that makes my heart warm most keenly to the sights, sounds and stories of Scotland? The history of Scotland is not romantic; rather it is a testament to the indomitable spirit, the deep affinity between its people and the natural world. In Gaelic culture eloquently expressed in literature, poetry and song.

Every summer I can’t wait for the Highland Games and when I hear the first skirl of the pipes I feel a thrill of anticipation waiting for the full throaty drone to swell to a heart soaring crescendo. I know I am not alone among people who can be moved to tears by the sound of a really good pipe band.  Highland games are full of events to please people of all cultures and ages. Watching the massed bands, the Heavy events- the Stone throw, the Caber toss, Highland dancing are just some of the events that make for a fun filled weekend.

Last summer we took Cailean to the Highlands of Durham Games to participate in the Scottish Breed dog show, I enjoyed myself even more than usual. Having my Scottish Deerhound stroll through the grounds as the ambassador she is was wonderful. Cailean was gentle and gracious & was happy to meet and greet any one that wanted to meet her. It was interesting that there was not a moment of skittishness on her part to the sound of the bagpipe. I am getting excited in advance looking forward to the Games this year; in fact I’ve made reminders on my calendar for the events I hope to attend. If you’ve never been, look up a festival in your area you’ll be glad you did.
